Light-Skinned Muslimah Seeking Doctor: The Jahaliyyah of Matrimonials

Nouman Ali Khan

Description:

Countless Muslims are using the search engines of the Internet to search for a spouse. However, a quick perusal of Muslim matrimonial websites reveals how basic Islamic principles are ignored. A person’s income, race, and color – or worse yet, skin tone – are often greater considerations than a person’s piety. The pictures that accompany many “profiles” are indecent. How safe are these sites, especially for women? Why are Muslims using “virtual meat markets” to find a potential spouse? How can our communities facilitate young people’s search for a spouse? What does our religion have to say about contacting perfect strangers of the opposite sex for “love and friendship”? How can we better address the real crisis that lies beneath “Light-skinned Muslimah seeking Muslim doctor to share life with”?

Is this legal? I just checked the ris site and its not up there. Just making sure….inshallah it is.

  2. how can i download video of this lecture from pakistan? Youtube is blocked and we are using differend proxy sites to serve the purpose but many important islamic videos are either removed from youtube or, are not being properly streamed. Kindly upload these videos on vimeo just like TDR have their website on vimeo so that people who cannot access youtube can benefit from islamic lectures.

    Asalaamu Alaikum,

I can appreciate that you felt compelled to speak to matrimonial issues as they relate to the Indo Pak culture, but the issue of color is a LOT more pervasive than you let on. And, it is not simply a matter of ethnicity.

As a dark-skinned African-American Muslimah, I am appalled to find that more often than not sisters of my description are overlooked (as marriage prospects) for women who are closer to the caucasian complexion. Rarely is any consideration given to whether the lighter skinned woman is strong in her iman and in some cases she may not even be Muslim! I thank Allah (swt) that I do not suffer from racial biases. I am open to marrying any brother who demonstrates that he truly loves Allah regardless of his skin color, national origin, tribal affiliation, etc.

The fact that racism is practiced among Muslims is a serious matter which needs to be addressed– community wide!
