Assalaamu Alaykum,

Imran Hosein says the town which is spoken about in Surat al Anbya verse 95 is Jerusalem. But when I look at the translations, most of them say "every town" or "any town" instead of "a town". look:

Sahih International
And there is prohibition upon [the people of] a city which We have destroyed that they will [ever] return

Muhsin Khan
And a ban is laid on every town (population) which We have destroyed that they shall not return (to this world again, nor repent to Us).

Pickthall
And there is a ban upon any community which We have destroyed: that they shall not return.

Yusuf Ali
But there is a ban on any population which We have destroyed: that they shall not return,

only 1/4 is talking about one town. I'm confused about this now =S so can you help me out since you know Arabic and tell me which is right? And if "any town" is right, does this make Imran Hosein's claim false?

Thanks

LOL! The Arabs are the best scholars?! What a JOKE! The Saudi "scholars" are hypocrites who sit and kiss the throne of a king who bends over for westernized powers everyday. The Wahabi ideology is single handedly one of the worst things to come out of that region of the world. They are ignorant, contradictory, and even go so far as to claim that some of the verses of the Quran abrogate others! If you ask them which verses are abrogated they start disagreeing with each other and can't even decide! They don't follow any madhab and say it's ok to follow bits and pieces of each madhab by taking rulings out of context.

My dear sister, please don't take this the wrong way, but you are in desperate need of a good education. You need to read up a lot on what is going on in the world of politics and science and start studying history. I suggest you do your very best to get into a reputed university. You know, for all the evil the west does, it's hard to argue that they don't have some of the best universities around, i suggest you try to get into one.

I usually try not to toss this word around but, you accusing brother Hasan of lacking faith in the power of Allah simply because he has a different way of viewing things is nothing but ignorance on your part. You've made a serious accusation out of pride and if you don't apologize for it you will be sinned for it.

Asalamualaykum. Sister Nadia there is nothing in Islam against symbolic interpretation. We must not be lazy in our faith. Islam commands us to gain knowledge, not just knowledge of Islam, but knowledge of all things. We are also commanded to think and use judgement(aql). When we have this knowledge like Sheikh Imran Hosen does mashallah, we can interpret modern events in the context of Quran and hadeeth

Islam also forbids us to excessively praise the prophet (saw). We must keep in mind that he was still just a man, living 1400 years ago, for him to convey his messages of the visions of the future he had to convey them in a way his people would understand. To them a donkey was a common form of transportation and they didn't know what an airplane was, so he said donkey.

Many hadeeth are written in poetic metaphor. For example, the hadeeth say there will come a time when women will be wearing clothes but be naked. If you take that literally it is an oxymoron that makes no sense at all. The only sensible way to take it is as a a metaphor. Another hadeeth says when you eat with your left hand shaytan eats with you. Should we take that literally? If you think about it and know arabic you will know the word for shaytan in that hadeeth also means dirt. The hadeeth means it is dirty to eat with your left hand, not that the devil simultaneously sits with everyone who eats with their left hand. That's not even possible and it would be a huge waste of time on his part! lol.

We also need to keep in mind that the hadeeth, no matter how authentic, are not the Quran. They were not even written down until at least 200 years after the death of the prophet(saw). That leaves a lot of room for distortion and interpretation. Have you ever played the game telephone? You sit in a circle with some people and whisper something in one persons ear, and they pass it on, almost always by the time the last person hears it the message has been distorted.

Lastly, i want to point out that it is very dangerous to take everything literally. The reason our Muslim societies are in a pathetic state is because they take everything literally without any knowledge of the world or science. This is the way of the wahabi, and it is responsible for a lot of ignorance, violence, poverty, and sickness amongst our people.

May Allah guide as all
