As-salaamu’alaykum wa Rahmatu Llahi wa Barakatuhu

Masha’Allah, definitely a lecture we all need to listen to, even if you ‘think’ you know enough on this topic. Please make some time to listen to it, and insha’Allah learn from it.

    Wa’alaykum as-salaam
    Farhana

  2. Nurulhuda says:

Alhamdulillah. Excellent lecture. May Allah bless Abdur Raheem Green.

  3. AH says:

Is he a scholar? People should read books by real scholars, even if some of the things brother AR Green says are useful and basic concepts of Tawhid, we should be careful to analyse what he says and not take everything at face value.

  4. AH says:

Especially on issues where there is Ikhtilaf (difference of opinion) between scholars i.e. tawassul. There is an adab of issues where there is ikhtilaf and sadly a lot of da’ees do not confirm to this. Read about the classical scholars of Islam (Abu Hanifa, Muslim, Ahmad, Malik, Nawawi etc) and you will see their exemplery manners when there is a difference of opinion of an issue and how they respect the other point of view. Remember Allah could have made Islam a rigid deen full of black and white rules, instead it is testimony to his infinite mercy that he has allowed these differences. SubhanAllah

  5. umm yahya says:

ameen to the dua of Nurulhuda.we as muslims sometimes need to speak the good or keep quite. when ever there is someone such as a caller to islam or a scholar speaking good and forbiding the evil, theres muslims opening there mouths trying to discredit them. i am sick of reading negative comments about other muslims all the time, we need to fear Allah and stop. if someone wants to find out about the qualifications or the teachers of a sheikh, than thats fine, they should do that privately, but to yap yap about them on line is ignorance and a sinful deed.

  6. AH says:

Umm Yahya – isn’t knowledge fard? isn’t there a massive responsibility when giving Da’wah? ARG is the 1 who is having digs at people who do certain practices, what I am saying is that there is a difference of opinion between the scholars as to the permissibility of these practices (i.e. intercession of the awliya). Therefore, ARG has no right to drop fatwa’s, he is not even a scholar. Look at the status of the Sahaba that our beloved Rasool Allah (SAW) sent to give da’wah to Yemen, Iraq etc, they were some of the most knowledgeable. We need to maintain the integrity of our deen by educating ourselves and then people like ARG would be challenged when giving 1 sided salafi arguments without acknowledging that people who follow traditional teachings and scholars differ.

  7. AH says:

Sister Umm Yahya – by the way, reform of the self (Jihad of Nafs) comes before enjoining what is good and forbidding what is evil. i.e. sort yourself out (gain knowledge etc) b4 sorting others out

    Salaams

  8. Ghazali says:

AH I agree. Painful, painful viewing, this should come with a WARNING!

This is not da’wah, this a just a blatant churning out of the Salafi agenda.

I wonder what Ijaza’s he has to transmit hadith?

  9. Sacred Knowledge says:

Just been having a listen and am somewhat disappointed and upset at brother ARG’s thinly veiled attack on traditional Islam. Even with my miniscule knowledge (im striving, inshallah) I can spot the fatwa of shirk on people who practice Tawassul. There are traditions which support this practice and he should be aware of these and point these out(i.e. time of drought during Hazrat Umar’s (RA) reign, the baraka of Imam Bukhari’s grave, Imam Ahmed’s approval etc).

Another reason I am disappointed is that brother ARG has signed up to the Muslim Unity thing (along with others), and this “attack” hardly helps the cause.

  10. AH says:

I implore every1 to listen to the most eminent Sheikh Mohammed Al Yaqoubi’s talk entitled “Ignorance – The disease of our times”. This talk puts my earlier comments into perspective.

Please search for the talk as it is not on Halal Tube. May Allah preserve the learned Sheikh and all the true scholars of Sacred Knowledge.

  11. Abu Malik says:

Brothers and sisters we should remember about the ettiquettes of correcting our brother or sister if they do something wrong. It is how you or I would like to be told when we make a mistake. Alone, privately with confidentiality. It is a practice of real Muslim’s as well as good ethics. We also must remember that no one is perfect except angels, and to think of our own shortcoming before we speak as though we are better than others.

  12. mohamed says:

if anyone want to listen to shayk muhammad al yaqoubi talk entitled ignorance-the disease of our time go to http://www.muhabbat ul deen .com to listen to it

ameen to ur dua AH may allah preserve shaykh muhammad yaqubi for this ummah and elavate his rank ameen

mashallah very good talk by shaykh muhammad yaqubi i think ARG should talk to shaykh muhammad about tawassul and if he want quran and sunnah im sure shaykh muhammad can provide him with it a true scholar

  13. AH says:

May Allah bless Rasool Allah (SAW), our guiding light, the mercy to the worlds, the illuminating lamp, the shadowless noor, the 1 who has been promised the most exalted station of intercession.

May Allah accept our dua’s and pleas of intercession to Rasool Allah (SAW), Al Gawth al Azam Sheikh Abdal Qadir Gilani (RA) and all the pious Awliya and Siddiqeen.

    Tawassul of Abu hanifa [rah]

    1) Mentioned from Imam Abu Hanifa in his Fath al-Qadir (Sharh al-Hidaya) the following narration

    ,

“When Imam Abu Hanifa visited Medina, he stood in front of the honorable grave (of the Prophet) and said,

“O (YA), most honorable of the Two Weighty Ones (humankind and jinn)!

O (YA), treasure of mankind, shower your generosity upon me and please me with your pleasure.

I am aspiring for your generosity, and there is no one for Abu Hanifa in the world but you.”

    2)

The Imam Azam Abu Hanifa Numan ibn Thabit (ra) writes in his famous Qasida-i Maymuna-i Mubaraka also known as Durru Maknun about Prophet (Saleh ala waalih wasalam that
    ,
“You [Muhammad saw] are the one, with Adam made Tawassul
and even he was your father, he was rescued”

When the Halil made Dua to you, the fire became cool
against your bright Noor the fire was calmed.”
    ,
“Prophet Ayyub[aleh islam] made Dua to you, when he was sick
All his sickness was deleted, when he made Dua to you!”
“So is Musa making all the time Tawassul with you
on the day of judgement he will search help by you!” (Bayt 9-13)

“Make Shafaat for this poor ya Rasulullah Madat!
I did came to your door, begging for richness by you!”
    (Bayt49)

Imam Al-Shafi`e Tawassul with Abu Hanifa

Al-Khatib narrates in Tarikh Baghdad that the truthful (saduq) qadi al-Husayn ibn `Ali al-Saymari narrated to them, that the trustworthy (thiqa) Imam `Umar ibn Ibrahim [ibn Ahmad] al-Muqri told him, that the trustworthy Shaykh Makram ibn Ahmad told them, that `Umar ibn Ishaq ibn Ibrahim [status?] told them, that the trustworthy Shaykh `Ali ibn Maymun told them: ‘I heard al-Shafi`i say: “I swear I seek the blessing of Abu Hanifa (inni la’atabarraku bi-Abi Hanifa) and come to his grave every day”’ meaning as a visitor. “Whenever I have a certain need I pray two rak`as then I come to his grave and ask Allah Most High for my need at his grave, and little time passes until it is fulfilled.”

Narrated by al-Khatib in Tarikh Baghdad (1:123) cf. al-Kawthari in his Maqalat (p. 453) and by Ibn Abi al-Wafa’ in Tabaqat al-Hanafiyya (p. 519) through al-Ghaznawi. Imam al-Haytami cites it in the thirty-fifth chapter of his book on Imam Abu Hanifa entitled al-Khayrat al- Hisan.

The wording “I swear” is questionable in light of the saying also reported from al-Shafi`i: ‘I never swore by Allah’ neither truthfully nor deceptively

Imam Dārimī relates from Abū al-Jawzā’ Aws bin ‘Abdullāh:

The people of Medina were in the grip of a severe famine. They complained to ‘Ā’ishah (about their terrible condition). She told them to go towards the Prophet’s grave and open a window in the direction of the sky so that there is no curtain between the sky and the grave. The narrator says they did so. Then it started raining heavily; even the lush green grass sprang up (everywhere) and the camels had grown so fat (it seemed) they would burst out due to the over piling of blubber. So the year was named as the year of greenery and plenty.

Dārimī related it in his Sunan (1:43#93); Ibn-ul-Jawzī in al-Wafā’ bi-ahwāl-il-mustafā (2:801); Subkī in Shifā’-us-siqām fī ziyārat khayr-il-anām (p.128); Qastallānī in al-Mawāhib-ul-laduniyyah (4:276); and Zurqānī in his Commentary (11:150).

“My life is a great good for you, you will relate about me and it will be related to you, and my death is a great good for you, your actions will be exhibited to me, and if I see goodness I will praise Allah, and if I see evil I will ask forgiveness of Him for you.”

THE HADITH OF THE BLIND MAN

Tirmidhi relates, through his chain of narrators from ‘Uthman ibn Hunayf, that a blind man came to the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) and said,

“I’ve been afflicted in my eyesight, so please pray to Allah for me.” The Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: “Go make ablution (wudu), perform two rak’as of prayer, and then say:
“Oh Allah, I ask You and turn to You through my Prophet Muhammad, the Prophet of mercy; O Muhammad (Ya Muhammad), I seek your intercession with my Lord for the return of my eyesight [and in another version: “for my need, that it may be fulfilled. O Allah, grant him intercession for me”].”
The Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) added, “And if there is some need, do the same.”

With regards to this Hadith Shareef about the blind man being asked to make Du’a with the Wasila of the Holy Prophet (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam), Sayyiduna Allama Abdul Ghani Delhwi (radi Allahu anhu) says, “It proves the permissibility of mediation and that of the Prophet’s (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) intercession. This command is that during his life, but also after his demise.” (Misbahus Zijaja Bar Hashia ibn Maja) Thus, one is allowed to seek the Wasila of the Holy Prophet (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) even after his demise.

(This hadith was recorded was recorded by Bukhari in his “al-Tarikh al-kabir”, by Ibn Majah in his “Sunan”, where he said it was rigorously authenticated (SAHIH), by Nasa’i in “Amal al-yawm wa al-layla”, by Abu Nu’aym in “Ma’rifa al-Sahaba”, by Baihaqi in “Dala’il al-nubuwwa”, by Mundhiri in “al-Targhib wa al-tahrib”, by Haythami in “Majma’ al zawa’id wa manba’ al-fawa’id”, by Tabarani in “al-Mu’jam al-kabir”, by Ibn Khuzayma in his “Sahih”, and by others. Nearly 15 hadith masters (“huffaz”, hadith authorities with more than 100,000 hadiths and their chains of transmission by memory) have explicitly stated that this hadith is rigorously authenticated (sahih).)

AFTER THE DEATH OF RASOOLALLAH (s.aw)
“A person came to ‘Uthman Ghani with regards to seeking some assistance, but he was unable to attract the attention of the khalifa on every attempt. The same person met ‘Uthman ibn Hanif, (may Allah be pleased with him), and told him his problem. ‘Uthman ibn Hanif gave him some advice which was: ‘Perform wudu, pray two rak’at nawafil and then supplicate in this way: ‘Ya Allah, I ask You through the wasila of Your Messenger Muhammad. The person again went to ‘Uthman ibn Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) who helped him with his work and also said, ‘If you ever need my help in future, I will help you (with regards to work)’ ”
    [Ibn Taymiyya, Qay’da Jaleelah, page 96, at-Tabarani, al-Bayhaqi, al-Hakim]

    IMAM MALIK
“Imam Malik was present at the blessed grave of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) whereupon Caliph Harun approached and asked him ‘Which direction shall I face when I supplicate?’ Imam Malik replied, ‘Why turn your face away from Rasulu’llah when he is a wasila for you as he was for your father, Adam.Turn your face towards the Prophet and make istishfaa [request for du’a]’
[Qadi Iyad, Kitab ash-Shifa, chapter on ‘Ziyara un-Nabi’]

  24. Sanah says:

Think of the tawassul issue this way; if you’re not completely sure about it due to conflicting opinions, don’t engage in it. You don’t need an intercessor to talk to Allah swt, because if He wills it, He will answer your duas. I mean, to each his own. If you have doubts about a particular topic, it’s best to stay away from it. Especially with regards to an important issue such as shirk in Islam.

  25. Umm Medina says:

Masha-Allah good lecture. He brings up very good points, and I’m really not sure why some people are so upset by his talk. He didn’t say anything bad or wrong or unislamic. Sometimes I think as Muslims we are so quick to jump to defense mode that we forget to just take a step back and listen to what people are saying. His advice is to stay far away from shirk and bida’a, very good advice! May Allah swt reward him for his efforts in Islam.

  26. Abu Malik says:

And hold fast, all of you together, to the Rope of Allāh (i.e. this Qur’ān), and be not divided among yourselves, and remember Allāh’s Favour on you, for you were enemies one to another but He joined your hearts together, so that, by His Grace, you became brethren (in Islāmic Faith), and you were on the brink of a pit of Fire, and He saved you from it. Thus Allāh makes His Ayāt clear to you, that you may be guided. (Aali Imran 3:103)

And verily! This your religion (of Islāmic Monotheism) is one religion, and I am your Lord, so keep your duty to Me. (Al-Mu’minun 23:52)

But they (men) have broken their religion among them into sects, each group rejoicing in its belief. (Al-Mu’minun 23:53)

And those who believe in the Ayāt (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) of their Lord, (Al-Mu’minun 23:58)

And those who join not anyone (in worship) as partners with their Lord; (Al-Mu’minun 23:59)

And those who give that (their charity) which they give (and also do other good deeds) with their hearts full of fear (whether their alms and charities, etc., have been accepted or not), because they are sure to return to their Lord (for reckoning). (Al-Mu’minun 23:60) It is these who race for the good deeds, and they are foremost in them [e.g. offering the compulsory Salāt (prayers) in their (early) stated, fixed times and so on]. (Al-Mu’minun 23:61)

There is no compulsion in religion. Verily, the Right Path has become distinct from the wrong path. Whoever disbelieves in Tāghût and believes in Allāh, then he has grasped the most trustworthy handhold that will never break. And Allāh is All-Hearer, All-Knower. (Al-Baqarah 2:256)

  27. Abu Malik says:

And indeed We have put forth every kind of example in this Qur’ān, for mankind. But, man is ever more quarrelsome than anything. (Al-Kahf 18:54)

Say (O Muhammad SAW): “I am only a man like you. It has been inspired to me that your Ilāh (God) is One Ilāh (God i.e. Allāh). So whoever hopes for the Meeting with his Lord, let him work righteousness and associate none as a partner in the worship of his Lord.” (Al-Kahf 18:110)

  28. Abu Malik says:

    18. And the mosques are for Allâh (Alone), so invoke not anyone along with Allâh. (Al-Jinn 18)

  29. jehnet says:

why are we taking words of certain scholars over the words of our phrophet s.a whos words came from allah? are we not those who belive? to listen to such a logical islamic lecture and then continue on the path of twisted words and saying from how long ago? if your read the quran and let go of you invalid hadiths from unreliable sources then we would be unified. and calling him a salafi? dude he himself in the lecture loving the allah is loving te prophet” dont get it twisted his talking about following the sunna to be close to allah, in this lecture he says these scholars said them selfs, if you find their adivce conflicting to the quran and origninal hadith it becomes haram. he says himself he does not follow any group but that of allah and that is what you all need to do, follow islam from quaran and authentic hadith i mean one that arnt conflicted by half them uslim world because surely allah leaves the authentic books untouched? does he not? coopy and paste all you like of this guy and that guy but who know better than allah and his prophet? WHO? shame on those who chose to cut down muslims and discredit them because of mere men. who choose to pray to the prophet? DID THE PROPHET HIMSELF EVER EVER EVER SAY PRAY TO ME? WALLLLLAHI BY ALLAH I DARE YOU TO FIND IT. and so if u cant your clinging to words of a man. ABOVE THE OWRDS OF ALLAH. shame on you for trying to discredit those who spread the word of allah unpartnered and untained. do you think the quran is of limits? do you belive these men have limited access that you cant find yourself? read it. and repent. for acts of shirk is no jokes and allah alone sent these truths down? who are you to twist and shift with groups and mere men? reflect read and re prioritise. salam.

Asking the prophet(sallallahu alaihi wa sallam)for help is shirk. Praying to the prophet(sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) is shirk but asking through the wasilah (means) of the prophet (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) is not shirk as supported by the hadith.
Those who deny intercession of the prophet (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) should stop believing in hadith and become “Only Quran” followers.

  31. welshmuslim says:

Asalaam alaykum dear respected brothers and sisters,

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

Can I just reiterate the points that have been mentioned before regarding a valid difference of opinion from rightly guided imams. These issues have been discussed at length throughout our history, scholars disagree on them with adab and understanding, each having evidence to support their claims. These scholars are capable of making such conclusions due to their level of scholarship. You cannot condemn people on matters of iktilaaf. You can advise them to come to the more cautious opinion – with adab and sincerity – but if they don’t then you have to leave them.

To those that are commenting on why people are following scholars over the Prophet (s), this claim is misleading and ignorant. Do these scholars not follow the Prophet (s)? The religion was never transmitted through books but from teacher to student. A big problem nowadays is the access people have to books via the internet or printing press. People have stopped sitting with QUALIFIED scholars and simply try to interpret the Qur’an and Hadith themselves. This was never part of our deen and is dangerous. If you had an ailment you would choose to go to a qualified doctor over going to someone who simply has a medical textbook. The former is someone who has studied medicine under other doctors and been awarded a licence to practice when deemed capable- whereas the latter has learnt from their own readings. Scholars are the same. They dedicate years, if not decades, sitting with teachers who have sat with their teachers all the way back to the Prophet (s). This is the traditional method of learning knowledge – isnad (chain) – with a person gaining permission (ijazah) in the Islamic science they are studying when the teacher deems them proficient. Nowadays people seem to think they have the ability to stand at a podium without any qualification and talk about issues that they know little about.

These matters of difference simply cause argumentation. It is important for us to leave argumentation. Imam Malik (r) would leave when there was argument. If someone has studied the deen for several years and you haven’t, you simply don’t have the prerequisite knowledge to debate things with them. We now see ‘Islamic speakers’ speaking on issues without even having a basic grasp of the Arabic language. The scholars have said that argumentation is makrooh amongst the ulamah, and haraam amongst the awaam.

If anything I have said is correct, it is from Allah, and anything wrong is from me. May Allah guide us all to the best.
