Prawn or any scavenger whether sea land or flight birds according to definition was declared harm. Do please don’t try to justify for your satisfaction.

    • ALI ADNAN says:

      Assalaamualaikum wa rahmatullah wa barakatuhu,
All bony fish which are not carnivorous are halaal Since I do not know which part of the world you belong to then giving examples is not desirable. Cartilgenous fish is haraam. Fish with scales are halaal if they are bony and non- carnivorous.Whoever says- shark is halaal is wrong.

      • AHMAD says:

I AM SORRY TO INFORM YOU BROTHER THAT IT IS YOU INDEED WHO IS WRONG!
        SHARK IS PERFECTLY HALAL!

        • faatih says:

sharks are Halaal as it is from family of fish
and prawns the is difference of opinion in the Hanafi school some eat some dont

          • Shakil Ratul says:

Sharks are strictly forbidden to eat in Islam, because any animal that lust on blood smell and man eaters are completely haram

        • Abdalleh says:

Shark is absolutely haraam. Your CAPS LOCK doesnt prove your point any more than your uneducated opinion. All carnivores are haraam, on land and sea.

          • Sohail says:

Those who are saying carnivores are not halal. Each and every fish eat earthworms and insects. Chickens eat insects. If you put cooked meat in front of a goat or sheep even they eat it. So stop making claims with no practical knowledge of deen or animals

        • kulfi says:

          IT IS NOT HALAL

        • Zakiya says:

Sharks are haram becus they dont hav bones , they r made up of cartilage which has half a density of bone.

          • shaik says:

Yaa,shark was halal i think bcoz in gulf country they are selling legally,so gulf people will know about the conclusion

      • himayoun says:

Mr. Ali…Asallam u alikum ..which fish u saw eating only veg….even a small fish almost every fish (of lakes or sea)eats small insects ,that doesnt mean that all fishes are haram.i personally think ,those fishes which r poisness r haram………ALLAH knows the best …..

      • Tanveer says:

I think u every time ask the fisher man that if this fish is vegetarian or non vegetarian….. Or do u search for a fish in the sea track it for months and c wether it eats other fishes or not….. It’s impossible to classify any fish to be vegetarian……

      • Sheikh Sufian Abdullah says:

You are correct, Shark is non-halal. as it is said, All fish with scales are halal with exception for carnivores and hunters. anything that has no bone/spine is haram, such as shelled or muscles. They are scavengers and carnivorous. CAN NOT be eaten. Be informed that things listed as makru are only makru upon the first use or eating of it, as in to tast. after the first time it will than be considered haram for you. SO avoid food’s that are listed as makru to stay away stay from haram. Allah knows best

        • Arman says:

If u have eaten tuna or kingfish or snapper or mackerel or Dorado or wahoo. My brother, these all are carnivorous fish yet all Muslims eat these, so I can’t understand why you say that eating carnivorous fish is haram.

          • Shakil Ratul says:

Dude, carnivorous fishes aren’t haram at all. Around 80% of big fishes are carnivorous as they survive by devouring the smaller fishes. They are safe to eat for Muslims as long ad they are not man eaters like the shark. The first and foremost restriction in food habit for Muslims is to refrain from all animals that are man eaters. Hence, there’s a huge difference between mere carnivorous and actual man eaters

  3. please i want to know the halal sea food in islam

  4. AH says:

Sister Shahina. The types of halal sea food depends on which Madhab you follow. There is a difference of opinion of what is “fish” between the different schools. The Hanafi definition of fish is more restricted than the Shafi’i one so for example Imam Abu Hanifa position was that prawns are not fish whereas Imam Shafi’i deemed that prawns were fish.

Go to http://www.sunnipath.com for lists of what is allowed under Hanafi fiqh and a discussion of the madhab differences.

By the way Dr Z Naik does not follow a madhab so please bear this in mind when he listening to his bayans.

    • Bashir says:

Assalamu alaikum wa rahamatullahi wa barakatuh,
Brother and Sisters forget about all madhabs which who follows don,t worry these madhabs are not made by prophet Muhammad salallah alaihi wa sallam,
Allah swt. says don’t break the religion in pieces & whoever break Allah swt. will punish him/her on the day of judgement.
Muhammad salallah alaihi wa sallam warn us not to make sects in religion,
Hence follow the Quran & Sunnah of prophet Muhammad salallah alaihi wa sallam, Leave aside everythins madhab and all, IF we Follow the Quran & Sunnah guidance of rasullah Insha Allah we will be one united ummah.

    Thanks,

    • Mohammed Siddique says:

Assallam O Allaikum, dear Muslim friend, we are only allowed to eat haram if our life is threatened with hunger or if we are physically forced to do so, but in your case I had similar problems when I came back to Canada & halal meat wasn’t convenient for me right away so I kept eating lentils which are a great source of protein & highly nurtritious, & with some spices can be far better tasting than any meat, in the mean time pray to Allah that may He give you means of enjoying halal meat once again, like I did, & InshAllah very soon you shall find some way of obtaining halal meat, but I assure you, that InshAllah, lots of potato, lentils & other healthy and nutrisious dishes & alternatives will easily help you maintain a healthy weight level, InshAllah, Jazak Allah

    • fatma says:

  11. Ali says:

    Islamic greetings,

Brothers and sisters in Islam. I am living in Germany and having a problem of having halaal meat. Some people say, its not allowed to eat meat that is being sold here in super markeets but some says that its allowed. No doubt, Allah’s name was not there while slaughtering that particular animal but some one can say with the name of Allah while eating the meat.

What is authentic and what is not?

    • n says:

      Assalamulaikum wr wb brother,

If you can’t find halal meat. You can try finding kosher meat sold by the jews. We can eat that. Another idea is if you find any christian butcher who does slaughterings, you can tell him that if you mention the name of god when slaughtering, me and other muslims will buy meat from you.

If you really can’t, then buy seafood.

If you really can’t then try to only buy poultry from the supermarket because they normally don’t die before being slaughtered, and mention the name of Allah SWT. Finally, you can buy the other if it is too difficult and mention the name of Allah SWT.

        Salaam,

I appreciate you bringing focus to the fact that Allah makes it easy for us to be a muslim. Reading some of the contradictory comments above confused me about all the shark fins I saw being sold in Saudi super markets.

        Thank you kindly.

About sharks, from what I can deduce they are permissable. I would eat shark meat or drink shark fin soup. But I won’t go buy shark meat and make it because of the hadith above, just to be safe. But I would order it at a restaurant just not to make haram what Allah SWT has made halal.
          http://quran.com/5/96

Although we shouldn’t have too much of shark (or anything for that matter) because shark might contain some level of mercury.
          http://water.epa.gov/scitech/swguidance/fishshellfish/outreach/advice_index.cfm

Certain sea creatures which are already found dead like whale are permissable. As long as they are not hazardous.
          http://www.sunnah.com/urn/40540

May Allah SWT forgive us for and from anything that I’ve said wrong.

          • n says:

If you think about it, a large amount of fish in the sea are predatory and have fang-like teeth anyways. So why do people keep making an exception for the shark? Jaws 3?

On second thought, I would buy shark meat if I wanted to. Allah SWT knows best.

            Assalamulaikum wr wb.

    • n says:

      Assalamualaikum wr wb br Samiullah,

I will try my best to answer this Inshallah, but only Allah knows best and forgive me if I’m wrong and please also do some research.

Everyone is responsible for what they do and they alone have to answer to Allah SWT. We can advice and tell them but in the end it is up to themselves. I agree with what you say, you advice is correct and you will be rewarded for your effort.

In the end only Allah SWT knows their true circumstance and if they think that they have an answer to give to Allah SWT on the day of judgement for the meat they ate while there were so many other halal meat like fish they could eat for almost the same price; then they can continue eating it.

Allah SWT is they most merciful and he might forgive them, but you will be rewarded even for the thought of abstaining from the meat for sure. We Muslims are allowed to even eat something haram like pig when there is nothing else to eat and we’re dying out of hunger. But I strongly feel this is not the right situation we are allowed to do that yet. I’m fairly positive any Muslim you ask will agree.

One more thing br. just because you are trying to follow Allah SWT’s commandments, my heart is not calm until I tell you that riba, taking or paying interest is haram also. Just incase you didn’t know. Please research more about it and stay away from it. We are not in this dunia for long, it is not worth it.. akhirah is better. Here is a link to a lecture about prohibition of riba. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=spPDccqW1ls

Assalamulaikum wr wb, may Allah SWT reward you and forgive me for all mistakes :'(

Assalamulaikum wr wb. As far as I know its halal brother.

    • Junaid says:

What do u mean halal by Sunnah, you should be asking if it is Halal in Islam, you should always follow Quran and look towards Hadees/sunnah if something is not clearly mentioned in Qura’an

  14. i says:

It depends on what school of thought you follow If you follow Hanafi then no its halaal to eat.

  15. i says:

It depends on what school of thought you follow If you follow Hanafi then no its not halaal to eat.

  16. Tanveer Siddiqui says:

Request people to make an effort
    and read the quran
and read the translation and then
ask other people if still required.

    Chapter: 16 , Verse: 14
The word Nahl translates to meat.
It does not translate to Fish.

    Also read for yourself verse
    Chapter: 5 , Verse: 96

  17. Syed Jamal Naqvi says:

What is meant by different school of thoughts when the origin is from the same book Quran….What does Quran say about seafood and Kosher….can we eat all the seafood and can we eat kosher meat in restaurants where they don’t serve Halal. I read in some places that in the Kosher way of slaughtering they also say the name of Allah as per the Toorah, is this correct.

  18. Samreen says:

Asalualeikum dr zakir naik, my question is for u, I just want to know If there is a Surat or verses where it is mentioned that prawns are haram? Please answer bcause I am very confused about this bcause some muftis or maulanas says that it is halal but i believe in Quran and hadiths.

    • nn says:

Assalamualaikum wr wb, sister Samreen, I don’t think Dr. Zakir monitors this thread. Not Zakir Naik but I know that in the Quran 5:96 “Lawful to you is game from the sea and its food as provision for you and the travelers, but forbidden to you is game from the land as long as you are in the state of ihram. And fear Allah to whom you will be gathered.”

The Jews who keep kosher don’t eat shellfish such as lobsters, oysters, shrimp, clams and crabs because of their interpretation it says in the “torah” Lev. 11:9; Deut. 14:9 “Of the things that are in the waters, you may eat anything that has fins and scales..”

Only in the Hanafi madhab if I’m not mistaken Prawns are makruh but not haram. But do check it up as I’m not a 100% sure. Hope this helps a bit. Assalamulaikum wr wb.

  19. Me says:

Ppl what is wrong with u? Since when muslim can eat kosher? Stop misleading others and not all sea food is allowed snails are haram for example! Wash ur mouths when you talk about Allah law and ask forgiveness! Jews have a different law about cutting meat and I remind u guys that Jews are eating like Christians now and they have their own wine! Does it make it halal too? Allah made us different from the rest for a reason, I’m very surprise how ppl are ignorant these days! Allah knows best

    • n says:

Since Surah Maida ayah 5 was revealed: This day [all] good foods have been made lawful, and the food of those who were given the Scripture is lawful for you and your food is lawful for them. And [lawful in marriage are] chaste women from among the believers and chaste women from among those who were given the Scripture before you, when you have given them their due compensation, desiring chastity, not unlawful sexual intercourse or taking [secret] lovers. And whoever denies the faith – his work has become worthless, and he, in the Hereafter, will be among the losers.

      Surah Maida:96
Lawful to you is game from the sea and its food as provision for you and the travelers, but forbidden to you is game from the land as long as you are in the state of ihram. And fear Allah to whom you will be gathered.

Eat what is halal (lawful) and tayyib (good) and Allah SWT knows best. If you love sea snails then go ahead and eat them they’re halal a 100%. http://islamqa.info/en/ref/114855
Anything I’ve said wrong is mine alone.

    • Mordachi says:

Kosher Meat is halal, so is chicken and turkey. Fish too. What has wine got to do with it? Observant Jews do not eat like Christians. Leave the wine for me, thanks and may Allah bless you.

    • M Khan says:

Please do not let your hatred of Jews cloud facts. many Muslims also do not behave as Muslims should either.devout Jews do say Allah s name and slaughter properly.kosher meat is halal.Religious jres do not eat like Christians and would never eat meat sold or slaughtered by christians because they are not sure pig or other non kosher animals were slaughtered with the same knives. To christians everything is permitted.Christians have no rule against eating an animal that died from disease or is ill. They also have no issue shooting.electricuting, hanging animals to kill them. This is of course not permitted in Islam and also renders an animal not kosher.Jews have stricter dietary laws than in Islam. Please educate yourself before spreading hate. The path of Islam is peace.Spread the light and love of Allah ,not just spread a misinformed opinion.

    • Faizaan says:

Muslims are allowed to eat kosher as long as the food does not contain wine

  20. Nadia says:

so is squid halal or not? people beat around the bush way too much. and if it is not, why not?

  21. Abidur Rahman says:

Assalamualaikum. I just wanted to know if Squid is Halal in our Religion. I’ve read that in some parts of Malaysia, Muslims prefer squids, but I’m still confused. So please someone tell me if squid is Halal or not.

  22. Nousheen says:

Can we eat kishor chicken if hilal meat is not available. Which fish is not hilal

  23. Nouman says:

if chicken is not slaughtered according to islam or the chicken without takbeerah . is that chicken haram or makrooh or what?

  24. There seems to be so much confusion about Halal and Haram food among muslims in western countries also even in muslim countries. Why can’t muslim scholoars from all islamic denominations get together and study every sects rulings on halal and Haram food. I have read some where in quran that only fish halal are the ones that have Gills muslims have traditionally followed it. There was nothing about fins and scales that is the rulings from Tuarat(torah) Old Tastement of Jewish Bible. Looking at the Shia rulings and Hanafi rulings are almost similar there for it seems like Shia’s are much closer to the food practice in Prophet’s time so is the Imam Hanifa’s. Imam Malik , Hambali and Shafi’s ruling may have arised becoz of the vast majority of muslims around the coastal areas of Africa, asia and Pacific have life depends on those food. I don’t think eating other sea food other than fish will make you sinner

  25. rafia says:

Plz tell me r the gills of a fish halal or haram for muslim.whether we hav to bring them out before cooking or not

brother u r probably wrong when ALLAH swt says sea food is halal it means it is halal that may b anything if anyone dont like seafood or anything from seafood (like me, i dont eat any of it) we should not stop those for others….as making things haram or halal is what decided by ALLAH swt. Please before pointing this or that haram or makru we should have some knowledge and making things haram or halal for other humans is also haram (recall the hadiths of prophet Muhommad pbuh). and please dont keep on pointing any scholar (like dr. zakir naik) for he is indeed doing ALLAHs messengers pbuh work of dawa if you see fault pray to ALLAH instead of insulting poiting or humiliating….thats wrong and ALLAH swt dont like that in us….we are ashraful makhlukh which have been given intelligence, we should be that intelligent to help humanity than to point out others……ALLAH AZZAWAJJAL make it easy for us and guide us the right path and give us hidayat……i am personally telling sorry for who ever feels bad but who let you know about your bads to help you is your best friend….so not me but ALLAH swt is our bestest and closest friend trust HIM for i just shared it with you for only HIM….!

    • Shakil Ratul says:

Dunno who the hell you are and why you would bring another dumb topic on an important Islamic food habit discussion forum here… Next time, ask your questions in relevant topic related places. But to answer your question, there is no age restriction in marriage, whether be the man or woman as the older one. Our Great Prophet Muhammad himself married to Khadija who was 14 years older than him. And marrying off to cousins is safe as well, as long as both the parties’ families are on agreement

why are there so many different opinions, does it not mention in one book what to eat and what not to, or is there a paragraph with vague writings and different people make there own meanings

  40. sharuq says:

    Is oysters halal or haram

  41. Abdus says:

The argument that you can only eat fish that isn’t carnivorous is complete garbage considering most fish are carnivorous. They tend to eat smaller fish, insects and guess what, you go fishing with a worm on your hook so that makes about 99% of fish carnivorous. Please use common sense when commenting.

    • Mohammed says:

According to following the Holy Quran all creatures from the sea are good to eat apart from poiseness fish and plants. It’s written that when Prophet Muhammed PBUH companions made a journey to medina they ate some kind of big fish which lasted them over a month. I dont know which fish but I’m assuming whale or Shark. All sea creatures are permissible to eat.
Nearly all sea creatures are carnivorous so the logic behind this theory is wrong to say all carnivorous fish are haram.

Alligators, crocodile, turtles are haram sea creatures and maybe few more.

    • Mohammed says:

“Lawful to you is what you catch from the sea and (use) it for food as provision for yourselves and for the travelers…” – [Qur’an 5:96]
All sea food should be halal according to the Holy Quran apart from poiseness fish and plants.

Another fact is below of a big fish such as a whale.

We were struck with severe hunger and the sea threw out a dead fish (whale) the like of which we had never seen. It was called Al-`Anbar. We ate of it for half a month. Abu Ubaida took (and fixed) one of its bones and a rider passed underneath it (without touching it). (Jabir added:) Abu ‘Ubaida said (to us), “Eat (of that fish).” When we arrived at Medina, we informed the Prophet (peace be upon him) about that. He said, “Eat, for it is food Allah has brought out for you, and feed us if you have some of it.” So some of them gave him (of that fish) and he ate it. – [Sahih al-Bukhari]
