    Assalaamu Alaykum brother

First I would like to note that I am not a scholar! This is what I could produce from what I have learnt. So if anyone finds a mistake in what I have written, please correct me. Now to answer the first part of you concern:

A translation of the Holy Quran of Sura 6:92 by Yusuf Ali reads:
And this is a Book which We have sent down, bringing blessings, and confirming (the revelations) which came before it: that thou mayest warn the mother of cities and all around her. Those who believe in the Hereafter believe in this (Book), and they are constant in guarding their prayers.

According to this translation, the Holy Quran was revealed to Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessing of Allah be upon him, to warn those is in the “mother of cities AND those around her”.

1-From my knowledge, this sura was revealed to the prophet (PBUH) in Makka. Al-`Awfi, `Ikrimah and `Ata’ said that Ibn `Abbas said, “Surat Al-An`am was revealed in Makkah” At-Tabarani recorded that Ibn `Abbas said, “All of Surat Al-An`am was revealed in Makkah at night, accompanied by seventy thousand angels, raising their voices in glorification of Allah” As-Suddi said that Murrah said that `Abdullah said, “Surat Al-An`am was revealed in the company of seventy thousand angels.” (my source: http://www.tafsir.com/default.asp?sid=6&tid=15024) We also know that the Prophet (PBUH) migrated to Madina from Makka. Many in Madina accepted Islam and many more verses were revealed to help guide the believers in Madina!

2-In addition, located in Madina at that time where the three Jewish tribes: the Banu Qaynuqa, the Banu Nadir, and the Banu Qurayza. These tribes established themselves in the Arab lands awaiting a Messenger from Allah. Alhamdulillah some from among these tribes did accept Islam although the majority opposed the Prophet (PBUH). We also know that the Prophet (PBUH) sent letters to the king of Persia and the emperor of Rome inviting them to Islam. If the Quran was meant only for the people of Makka then we would have to ask why the Prophet would invite others from outside of Makka to listen to what this Holy book has to say.

So, from these two points, and I am sure that there are many others, we can conclude that the Quran was in no way revealed only for the people of Makka.

Now to answer the second part

A translation of the Holy Quran of Sura Fussilat 41:44 by Yusuf Ali reads:

Had We sent this as a Qur’an (in the language) other than Arabic, they would have said: “Why are not its verses explained in detail? What! (a Book) not in Arabic and (a Messenger an Arab?” Say: “It is a Guide and a Healing to those who believe; and for those who believe not, there is a deafness in their ears, and it is blindness in their (eyes): They are (as it were) being called from a place far distant!”

It was revealed in Arabic because the people were Arabs and spoke for the most part Arabic. It would not make sense to send this revelation in any other language except the language that the people understood. Allah has described this best! Allahu Akbar!

I hope this helps. Allah (SWT) knows best.

  5. Naghmah says:

To understand the quran in detail we must study the tafsir or it, …meaning just literal translation is sometimes not enough, u have to understand the background, etc..of when an ayat was sent. I urge everyone to visit http://www.englishtafsir.com if they want to study the quran in detail, also has links to biography of Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. …and those who say Quran is only for the arabs and Makka are absolutely wrong, the Quran is for all humanity, and Prophet Muhammad is the final messenger…he specifically said no messenger will come after him, and Quran is the final divinely revealed scripture for all the people… the prophets (peace be upon them) who came b4 him were sent to specific nations and groups… but Allah made the last Prophet and last book a guidance and mercy for all of humanity till the Day of Judgement…and those who say u can’t believe hadith are also wrong.. of course you have to believe in the authentic hadiths and not the ones which r considered weak.. the reason is that hadiths are saying and doing of Muhammad s.a.w. which Allah wants us to follow, in the Quran Allah says many times that Muhammad s.a.w is a perfect example for us to follow, example, in the Quran it says over and over, ‘establish salah’… but how do u perform salah it does not mention, that’s where hadith(prophet’s example) comes in, and he showed the companions “how” they should do it…you cannot have Quran without sunnah and sunnah without Quran…they compliment each other..otherwise Allah wouldn’t send a living Prophet as an example, He would just drop a book from the sky..
