  1. abdullah says:

    Dear sister,
I listened to your lecture with sadness. The concept you are presenting here is nothing but feminism couched as an Islamic idea.
for e.g. I will cut and paste below a quote from a modern feminist Susan Faludi.

β€œThe modern fairy tale ending is the reverse of the traditional one: A woman does not wait for Prince Charming to bring her happiness; she lives happily ever after only by refusing to wait for him — or by actually rejecting him. It is those who persist in hoping for a Prince Charming who are setting themselves up for disillusionment and unhappiness.”

Is there any difference in concept with what this sister says except she is now justifying it as Islam.
Do your own additional research as to what feminism is and consider how it has infiltrated Muslim thought process.
You could start with “The second sex” by Simone de Beauvoir. And believe me this is a mild book. But it will give you an insight into feminist thinking that influenced western women more than half a century ago. Unfortunately it is happening to us Muslims too. ” The Prophet, SallAllahu alayhi wa Sallam said we will follow the people of the book even if they go down into the hole of a lizard.

May Allah help us and guide us all. Aameen

Abdullah (the first comment above), you got it totally wrong !!

  3. Ai says:

    Salam Abdullah^^,

I believe you are mistaken. What Sr. Yasmin is conveying is not feminism at all. What she is saying actually applies to both men and women, but it is more prevalent in women because of the social demands to a woman’s appearance in society. As a woman myself, I can attest that there is more pressure on women than men to “fit in” with society.
The concept of the western feminism was believed in undressing oneself and degrading oneself in order to achieve “equality” with men. BUT what Sr. Yasmin is saying is reinforcing pride in Muslim women that their worth is not decreed by the creation(mankind) but by the Creator(Allah). So by disregarding and unshackling oneself from the social status, Muslim women (and men) can achieve true liberation because MUSLIMS are here to please only Allah(swt) NOT society.

  4. abdullah says:

    Wa alaykum assalaam Sister Ai.

Thank you for commenting. Actually the feminists also say that women should not be undressed and made into objects. Their terminology for this is “sexual objectification”.
    See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sexual_objectification.

This same technique of using key terms used by the Sister ( such as slavery of women, the title of empowerment, Prince Charming etc) was used by Western feminists to spread their message and influence people. This is now happening to Muslims.
Islam did indeed liberate women but in a different way.

When in early Islamic History did women stand on public stages and give lectures of Islam? Again I am emphasizing standing up in a public stage and giving lectures to presumably a mixed crowd (and now on the internet for millions to watch). This is a very recent phenomenon and just because it is accepted now does not make it right in Islam. (When the Mothers of the Believers spoke, they spoke in their houses and behind screens. They did not go around giving lectures in public – ever.

    Jazakh Allah Khair

    Asalaam-o-alaikum all
This is a great lecture by Yasmin Mogahed.I agree with her and it is so true that our society demands and portrays women as pleasure objects for public consumption. Women can not compete with men or try to be like men because we are not created the same.We are all EQUAL in front of God but we have different obligations to contribute to the society.May Allah guide us all.

  6. Ahmed says:

    Abdullah,

AsSalamu Alaikum. There is nothing wrong in women giving public lecture. You are just over-reacting.

    Thank you.

  7. zm says:

Assalaamu alaikum , I being a woman totally agree with Br. Abdullah. The Prophets were all men . And ofcourse if a woman had to really give Dawah , then she could just handle sisters alone.Worst still is putting up her video on the web.

Let the men take care of Brothers! How many men are watching purely to gain knowledge ?

May Allah Azwajal Guide us all to what is Right!
